Multicultural Counseling

Central New Jersey is one of the most diverse places in the country, and we are lucky to have neighbors from all over the world. However, for families adjusting to life in a new country while raising their children, daily life can sometimes feel like a battle with strange rules of engagement.

In the past two decades, I have worked successfully with families from all walks of life and from countries all over the world, helping them to harmonize their own cultural heritage with the realities they face at home, in the workplace, schools, and community. I make a point of learning about every client’s background. By first exploring together both of our cultural understandings in a way that makes you feel comfortable, we’ll build a vocabulary between us to move forward with your concerns.  Whether that means taking it slow when it comes to talking about feelings, helping you to maintain important family goals in a shifting environment, or helping you and your children to communicate better with each other, I aim to develop trust between us while bringing in lots of laughter.

It can be scary to open up about needs, concerns, or disagreements in front of family members, but it can be incredibly healing as well. My office is a respectful, non-judgmental space where I make sure that each person’s voice is heard. When tension in a household runs high, being at home with your family can be depleting and anxiety-provoking. It can also have spillover effects at school, work, and socially. Investing the time in your family through therapy can help make your home the sanctuary it should be, and can lead to optimized functioning in other areas of family members’ lives.

I have years of experience working specifically with Asian and South Asian families and bring my family-focused orientation, deep respect of cultural traditions, and solution focus to that work. I frequently work with families on issues such as intergenerational communication skills; children and academics; adjusting to being in the same household after years of living in different countries; and arranged marriages.
